For 45 Years I Kept Other People's Clocks Running True. Then My Own Memory Began to Skip — Until a Quiet Daily Sound Helped It Keep Time Again.
Precision was my whole trade. When my own thoughts began running late and losing their place, I told myself it was just age. My granddaughter — and a stack of research papers — talked me out of that.
For forty-five years, timing was the whole of my trade. I kept a small watch-and-clock shop on the town square, and my job was to hear what other people couldn't — the balance wheel running a half-second fast, the escapement dragging, the tick that fell a hair out of step. Folks used to say I could tell a sick watch was sick just by holding it to my ear. I never needed the machines to confirm it. The right rhythm was simply there, and I knew the instant a thing had lost it.
So I can tell you the exact afternoon I got scared.
